Murder Rates

Now I read this. And this is the specific area I am looking at.

************************************************************

BALTIMORE (AP) Two visiting law enforcement officers were robbed at gunpoint outside a bar in a trendy section of Baltimore, hours before they were to attend the funeral of a Baltimore detective who was shot to death during a robbery attempt at the end of his shift.

A federal agent and a Virginia state trooper were in Baltimore Tuesday for the funeral of Baltimore Detective Troy Chesley Sr., 34, whose murder last week seemed to embody the city's problem with violent crime.

Chesley, a 13-year veteran who worked in the unit assigned to patrol public housing, died in an exchange of gunfire with a would-be robber who accosted him near his girlfriend's west Baltimore home. Chesley had just gotten off work and was in plainclothes, and police believe he was a random victim. They charged a 21-year-old man who had more than 17 arrests on his record with the shooting after scouring local hospitals for someone with a gunshot wound.

It was the third violent attack against a city police officer in three months, each case involving apparently random crime.

On Monday, Jason E. Dietsch of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Virginia State Trooper Michael McCann joined thousands of law enforcement officers converging on the city for Chesley's funeral the next day. The two told The (Baltimore) Sun that although they did not know Chesley, they felt compelled to show their support.

The two men were dining with friends including Baltimore County officers in Canton's O'Donnell Square, a popular block of bars and restaurants not far from the Inner Harbor.

About 2:30 a.m., Dietsch, McCann and a friend were standing and talking on the street when two men came up to them and demanded money. McCann was punched in the face. Dietsch was struck on the side of the face with a pistol. City police arrested Jean Sierra, 20, of Glyndon, after spotting him walking ``very quickly'' away from the scene and charged him with 23 criminal offenses, including robbery and handgun charges, according to charging documents.

Dietsch was hospitalized overnight with a bruised eye socket and missed the funeral.

``I'm upset that I couldn't go,'' Dietsch told The Sun in a telephone interview Wednesday. ``I'm upset that stuff like this is happening in Baltimore and in areas that are fairly decent. I could have been dead. This is terrible. This city has been horrible lately.''

McCann was able to play bagpipes at Chesley's funeral as he had planned.

Chesley's death provoked authorities to speak out against conditions where not even police officers are safe against violent crime.

``We're hurting as a department,'' Police Commissioner Leonard Hamm said after Chesley's shooting. ``We're hurting as a city.''

Officer Momudu Gondo was wounded Dec. 5 as he got out of his car near his home in Northeast Baltimore after work. Police arrested a suspect about a week later. Gondo, who also returned fire at his assailants, was wearing a ballistic vest and survived the shooting.

In November, Sgt. Christopher Nyberg managed to disarm a would-be robber who held a knife to his throat, Blair said. Nyberg, a former Marine, then reached for his service weapon and shot two of the four people who tried to rob him as he walked home in the Federal Hill neighborhood.

And in September, Officer Robert Cirello was shot while on patrol in Patterson Park. He was wearing body armor and survived.

Lt. Paul Blair Jr., president of the city chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police, said officers need to be more careful. He said too many officers may believe they have ``cheated death another day'' when their shifts end, only to forget about late-night dangers on city streets as they go home.

``It just seems maybe our guys just can't stop dropping their guard when they finish up their day,'' Blair said.

Just when I start looking at houses in Baltimore City, specifically Canton we have 15 murders in the first 10 days of the year including a cop.

I thought you lived in this area. You should already know, Baltimore is not a great place to live. Crazy drug addiction rates, crazy murder rates, just crazy crime rates in general.

Columbia or Ellicott City FTW

Canton is an extremely hot area and will continue to be just like Federal hill. I will see a great return after 5 years. Also crime in Canton is normally low. What just happened was a suprise.

Ah i gotcha.

I personally wouldn't even pay $300K to live anywhere in baltimore 😛

Same for DC. Sure it has some nice areas, but all in all it's too crowded with a lot of crime.

This is akin to saying "I don't want to live in Manhattan because there's lots of crime in Queens.

(1) i've been living in Canton for 1.5 years and have never had a problem. i lived in columbia for 1 year and got mugged within a 1/4 mile of my apartment (which was located on a golf course - i.e. "nice area")

(2) you can get a *very* nice rehabbed home in Canton in the low 300's. i'm on arguably one of the best blocks in Canton and the house across from me is going for $319k (has all the yuppie requirements - granite countertops, hardwood floors, exposed brick, etc)

This is exactly what I am looking for. Looking to stay 5 years or until my then wife gets pregnant.

This is probably going to start a little war right here, but I'll ask asnyway.

What is Maryland like for gun control and are there any city ordinances for Baltimore about guns?

Baltimore is a pit of a pit. Youre going to get that in every neighborhood.

At least in Baltimore you also have a good trauma hospital too..probably the best in Cowley Shock Trauma Center
