A school in England got rid of the more unhealthy foods and started to do more healty foods. The kids weren't eating it and were starving. One of the kids mothers comes in at 1st break to get orders and buys them burgers, chips, pizza and fizzy drinks and gives them their food and change at lunch. Now she does this for upu to 50-60 kids!

Now 4 mothers do the lunch run but they do not make any profit. The mums want the kids to eat 'properly' and not starve.

The school can't do anything about it because the mums aren't school ground :p

What do you guys think?

1 in 4 kids are obese or are going to be obese within 4yrs.

It's their kids.

Seriously, just how much control do you want the government to have over how you raise your kids?

I agree with serving only healthy food at school and it's ok with me if mothers want to buy their little darlings junk food for lunch but it's not ok with me if they are buying my or other peoples kids junk food for lunch without our permission.

I also doubt any of those kids were actually starving. Even kids in the poorest schools in the US are far from starving.

Yep, I'm seconding this. I wish I had better alternatives to the p1ss poor pizza I ended up having every day for lunch at school. They served VERY LITTLE that was actually healthy in HS, and it was usually a smaller portion or cost more than getting a pizza.

Now I just pack my good stuff up for my trip to college. I thought it was bad at HS, but when you let corperations run ammuk, you can't get a heathy meal for less than $6 unless you wanna wait in line for half an hour. Campus is crazy.

Too bad they don't have a giant rotsesserie so they could serve healthy food like Chicken, Lean Pork and Beef Roasts with steamed veggies. Kind of hard not to make fare like that taste good. During the Spring months they could whip out a giant grill and BBQ all sorts of good tasting food while the kids sat in class studying before lunch. I guarantee you that by lunch time none of them would be passing up on lunch.

Somehow, I doubt they are doing it witout the parent's permission.

Another question I have is how are these mothers able to take lunch orders if they aren't on school grounds? Even with open campuses most kids aren't allowed off campus until lunch time so when would these mothers have the time to take the order, collect the money, get the food and deliver it?

i went to 2 different high schools during my time. One was in a very rich area. So the lunch was great. it had a pizza bar, deli bar (sandwich), pasta bar, and salad bar and the regaler lunch that only the kids on free lunch used heh. it really did not matter which one you hit they all were good.

they did not have any candy, pop or such. they did have vending machines that were only open AFTER school.

it was such a pity i only went my freshman year :(

the other school i went to was the opposite. it had the lunch line and a snack bar. the snack bar had candy, pop, nachos and pizza (on Wednesday pizza hut would come in!). the only food Worth eating was pizza hut.

but it did have a open campus. so i would go down to KFC or BK (the 2 closest to the school). or bring my lunch.

but it also had vending machines in a few different places around the school. that were always open. Some parents tried to get them closed during school hours but the vending machine company filled some lawsuit against the school.

I'm quite surprised they'd rather starve than eat something healthy. I'd eat fruits and vegetables any day if I were starving. Not that I'm a huge fruit eater myself but they're not that bad.

They are passing the food through the gates at school or through holes in fences. So they aren't on 'school ground' they are just passing the food through.

Correct that the kids aren't allowed off school grounds.

They take the orders at break time again through the fences.

I mean junk food isn't bad in moderation with an overall 'okayish' diet and moderate execise. But I bet most of those kids aren't eating healthy most of the time and lack the amount of exercise.

It isn't Kosher but the school doesn't have a leg to stand on legally so they can't stop the kids eating crappy food.

Oh well, welcome a nation of fatties...and we're hosting the 2012 Olympics :p. Hopefully I'll be competiting.

I bet they do have a leg to stand on. Selling food through the fence, even if it's not for profit, sounds like it breaks a rule or two.

Well school lunches are what? Around $2 these days? I can't imagine what kind of dreck they're serving at those prices(and making a profit). When you go that cheap, making anything both healthy & taste good is nearly impossible.

I saw the Jamie Oliver program about school lunches in the UK and the food was downright nasty.

The obesity trend isn't going to turn around until we properly educate younger generations and they grow up to pass on healthy living habits to THEIR children. You just can't expect to change the habits of the majority of adults, and you have to work extra hard to undo the damage they do to their own children. You can certainly do a lot on small scales (individuals and small groups), especially people in the fitness industry, but until we make proper health and nutrition education a staple in public schools I just don't see much major progress happening. Recent studies show that holistic health strategies that combine PE with Nutrition Education and healthy school lunch programs dramatically decrease risk of obesity compared to once-a-day PE sessions. That sounds obvious, but very few schools actually do this atm.

Kids don't get PE one a day...more like 2 a week.
