Could someone explain how they work? It sounds pretty neat and I wonder why it has taken so long for something like this to come out.

... on another note, do you really think that a computer-based internet forum is the best place to look for information on transmissions!?

If I'm not mistaken, multitronic is a CVT transmission with different "programs" tailored to different driver needs. You can program the transmission for performace, or for economy, or for hauling, or for high speed passing, or a couple other needs.

It's possible with CVT because there is an infinite number of gears available and the car can almost instantly put itself in the powerband for passing or accelleration from a stop, or take itself out of the powerband and into cruising mode to get good gas milage.

The reason you haven't seen it is because 1. it's complicated, which means expensive. And 2. the american market is reluctant to change. CVT transmissions scare people because they drive different.

Search Results for 'multitronic ':

Would you like to see more search results for the term "multitronic"?

Any result here would be better than that link as a search on multitronic resulted in no matches. ;)

I'll add another reason.

3: CVTs cannot handle a lot of torque. Most I've ever seen is 286lb-ft from the J-Spec Nissan Cedric/Gloria, and that car doesn't even use a belt/chain.

Audi's technical specialists have modified the variator of the continuously variable transmission by adopting a new transmission element known as the link-plate chain, to handle the high forces and torques that are developed constantly by the six-cylinder engine with a peak torque of 280 Newton-metres. The scope for using a continuously variable transmission has thus been significantly broadened.

I guess the Audi engineers listened :)
