Multithreading in games, MMOs, hex-cores?

Just wondering if there are any MMO titles that can take advantage of a hex-core? I know that most of them are fairly CPU-heavy, so I was wondering if there was any advantage in a hex-core for those sorts of games.

The reason I ask is, a friend of mine, I found out, upgraded his computer (without calling me first), and got an AMD hex-core. From what I've read on these forums, most people seem to think that they are a waste for games, and a Phenom II is equal or better.

Most recent or patched (like WoW) can execute code on as many cores that are available. As to if this increases performance, ie if 6 cores are any better than 4, is the real question. A decently clocked quad core should not impeed performance at all in WoW, which is why most people dont recommend 6 cores for that. It is not bad to have 6, just not really needed.

The added cores still mainly benefit multi-tasking operations more than anything. That's where multi-core CPU's shine, doing more at once. Game developers aren't getting nearly the kind of gains you see in day to day application use, then again gaming is more about your GPU as most the console hardware these games are catered to don't have near the amount of CPU power you can get in a high end PC right now.

There's a thread somewhere in this CPU forum that had a bunch of benches which pretty much lead to the conclusion that as of right now six cores over four is useless for gaming, while 4 cores over 2 can bring substantial benefits.

I think in time we'll see six cores put to use well just as four has made strides over 2 but it will take a little time.

Is it unlocked? Those X6's are still reasonable overclockers, and w/ TurboCORE can usually hit 4ghz (even without TurboCORE, honestly).

I have a 1055t (locked), and while I could only get it up to 3.4ghz base, TurboCORE hit 4ghz and I confirmed w/ a few benchmarks that I was getting ST performance in that range. So even SC does not lag for me 😀

What MMO's does he play? If it's older ones like EQ, don't bother. Newer patched Wow or maybe Rift can at least take advantage of more cores...how effectively is to be debated.

Honestly, my biggest reasoning for a multicore CPUs and MMOs was for boxing.
Run each client on its own core, for example.
😉
Or, even playing multiple games at once.
Quite often I found myself LFG for hours, and playing other games in the background.
Stuff like that.
Yep, multi-tasking games. 😀
