Hello,

My home server is in need of several ethernet interfaces, and as a result nearly all PCI slots are populated (4 legacy PCI + 2 64-bit ones)

So I was wondering whether you knew of any cheap 2 or 4 port ethernet NICs, preferably 64bit PCI ones so that they can handle the traffic passing through all 2 (or 4) interfaces...

Thanks in advance,
George

I've seen them for Sun machines, and Cisco of course, but never for PC...

Why do you need so many interfaces? Can't you use a router and a switch or something?

I've got one here I have not employed yet, with intel chips. I did a test box with it for a router with a couple of lans, but it was annoying as heck to sort out which port was which when configuring. I gave up and used three NIcs that I could sort out;)

I have one (can't remember chipset, think it's a rebadged intel card) that is 4 ports...there are lots of intel 2 ports. I just don't understand why you would need multiple ports for a server in our house....Most I have used on a normal box is 3, and that was a complex network lab setup.

gd, quad Intel and quad Tulip boards are out there for 10/100, they work well, they're pretty much all only available used at this point though. There are also quad DP83815 and quad ThunderLAN NICs out there, not as good.

Intel makes two and four port gigabit NICs. Watch out, the four port one is extremely picky about slots, basically it's PCI-X only (will not work in a normal 32 bit 33MHz PCI slot).

We use a load of there at work, and they work very well.
Or you could get used Sun QFE cards, I used one in my home firewall a while back, but I wasn't very impressed, performance wasn't that good.

I've seen many dual and quad 10/100 cards on ebay and a few intel dual gigabit cards as well.
