Multiple Video Cards -- NOT SLI

Hi all,
I've looked through as many posts as I could and although I did find some info I had a few more questions about multiple video cards within the same comp.

I am not looking to run SLI now but have currently my 8800GTX running in my eVGA i680 SLI board. The 8800GTX has dual monitor support. The other 2 PCi-express slots on my mobo are empty. I have also an ATI x1900XT and an Nvidia 7900GT sitting at home doing nothing, which I would rather not sell as, they cost me a mint.

Thus I have been on the Microsoft site where they have a whole section explaining the difference between running multiple monitors on single video cards and running on multiple video cards and driver certification on winXP -- XPDM WDDM etc. I am still not sure if you can run one Nvidia 880GTX on one PCI-e and then an ATI X1900XT on the other. Always thought that was one of the features XP was proud off. Guess I will find out tonight.

Can someone please explain to me what the benefits are of having 2 actual video cards in a comp (not SLI) in the sense of better running multiple graphic-intensive applications over a single video card with dual out?? Is there a difference?

My issues are that is it any better (faster, smoother, clearer) to have 2 video cards over a single card with dual out?

If you do have 2 cards can you assign one card to run your game and display it on one monitor and let the other card and monitor responsible to either play a DVD movie or have a second instance of a game up. For some of us playing multiple instances of Everquest or WOW or whatnot find it nice to have dual display but I have never been able to do it with a dual out single video card solution.

Hmmm...

I've heard some using one PCI-E video card and another using a PCI video card, and I believe they were each different brands as well.

But as far as two PCI-E video cards that are different brands.....not sure.

How many displays are you wanting to run and how many different games?

If you're wanting to run multiple windows of different games (e.g. one instance of WoW and another instance of EQII) you might be able to run each game in a window. That way, you could acutally be playing two different games on the same display. I have a friend who does that with FFXI and a windower designed for that reason. Running those MMORPG's like that has tons of benefits as there are many times where it would help to double check stats on a website or quest walkthroughs and it helps not having to jump through the "ALT+TAB" hoop.
