Multiple Screens in Linux

Hopefully one of the Linux Gurus here can help me. I have been using Linux Mint for several months and am quite comfortable with it. However, recently I just installed Mint 9 on a desktop that is a dual monitor setup. I had no problem configuring it to use both monitors. My problem comes from the way it handles them. Linux, for some reason, by default, is treating the second monitor like a second COMPUTER, it has its own applications menu and task bar. While I can move my mouse between monitors... the workspaces are completely separate, what I'm looking for is how to get it to be more like a second monitor in windows and just extend my desktop area, allowing me to drag windows between the monitors.

I spent some time trying different settings and was unsuccessful in emulating this effect. As it stands right now, I might as well have 2 separate machines, except if I want to have two browser windows open side by side, it says Firefox is already running on this machine, you need to close the other instance before opening another one. I can, on the other monitor say, file -> new window, but of course, can't drag that window to the other workspace.

This is how i function on dual monitors, I'm constantly moving windows between screens, resizing them, adjusting them, trying see as much of whats happening as possible. There is no compromise for this, this is a deal breaker for me if I cannot have shared workspace between the two monitors.

So, I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of the setting or fix that I've missed, or at least CONFIRM that there is no way to do this so I can just put my Win7 box back in place and leave Mint for my single head boxes.

If you have an nVidia card you can use the TwinView options in xorg.conf to adjust how it handles multiple monitors. If you're not using an nVidia card, I'm not sure since I haven't messed with the normal Xorg dual monitor stuff in a long time.

Oh yes, I do have nVidia, I meant to put that in there. It's a nVidia 8600GT 512MB.

Okay i figured out the monitors... now the sound is being silly... its working but its so quiet i can barely hear it with everything turned all the way up... SB Audigy... God i love linux xD
