At work I just got through moving a dozen computers of varying speeds and varying operating systems to a new building. I was wondering about doing some changes while I'm setting them up. If you have any opinions on the following, I'd love to hear them.
1) Is there any fix yet available for the slow access from a 2000 machine to an NT or 98 machine? It is silly that the 98 and NT machines can access the 2000 machine immediately but there is a 2 minute delay to transfer anything the other way. To me it would make sense that 2000 be backwards compatable while the others might have trouble accessing the 200 machine - but of course nothing ever makes sense and in this example things are just the opposite.
2) In my experience each new Windows is more bloated than the next. Thus older computers don't do as well. I'm considering moving some NT machines to 2000 or XP Pro. I tend to like 2000 better than NT, plus there is the issue of the extremely long delay when a 200 machine tries to access an NT machine. So it might be nice to rid myself of the NT machines. What would you consider a good minimum processor speed for 2000 or XP? Sure any computer can run them, but what will it take to run them well?
3a) Which OS is best for a printer server? I've got the printer on one of the 98 machines but I'm wondering if it will work better on an NT, 2000, or XP machine (assuming there are drivers of course).
3b) Same goes with Zip drive and CD writer.
