Multiple OS'

Just found an older version of Linux and thought about getting back into it again. I'm currently running on 98se and want to run both OS'... Now I've heard from some people that they like to create a very small FAT16 C: drive for boot files only, then install the OS' afterwards when they are running on more than one. Anyone have an opinion on that? Also, I know that Linux likes to be mounted on the front of a disk though Win98 should be installed first. So just partition the drive, install 98, then Linux and let LILO handle the dual booting? I currently have Mandrake 7 which is what I'm thinking of using for my linux version but are there any other suggestions people have? Preferably something I could learn from, not just pick up and use(which is kinda how Mandrake is). Thanks.

If you are using an older version of linux then you have to have the boot partition in the first x GBs of hard drive space, but I think the newer versions fix that problem. However, if you want to keep it easy, make a 16 - 30 MB partition at the beginning of the drive and use it for the linux /boot partition, then install 98se, and then linux. During setup linux will give you the option of added an option to the LILO boot menu for win98.

Mandrake 7 should be good for experimenting with, but the newer the better as the newer ones usually have better hardware support.
