If you want Conroe + SLI you'd be better off waiting for the 590 mobos. That one you got now isnt all that great IMO and not one I would reccomend to anyone for Conroe. Its an older mobo they upgraded and didnt do that good of a job of it IMO.
 
Agreed. Sticking with the P5B for now. Returned the CPU and got a new one, 28C idle, 42 at full load. Definitely a bad chip.
 
so, you had to RMA mobo to get from 90 deg to 60, and RMA an Intel CPU to get from 60 to 43.

now thats just insane, and not rational at all, but I aint gonna argue with you - you're happy and thats all that counts
 
I agree it's wierd, but that's what happened.
I may have solved the problem with temps. by exchanging the cpu first, but there was definitely some wierd voltage issue with that first mobo. I've never seen a chip shoot to 90+ that fast, idle.

Anyway, it's all working now, so thanks for the advice and suggestions.
