multiple ip's in XP

I don't know why this doesn't work. In 2k, you could give a single nic a second ip address no problem. Try it in xp. it seems to take fine, but ipconfig only shows 1, and I can't ping anything connected to that network. I have 2 computers connected through a hub and a dsl modem to the link of the hub, both computers have net access. In 98 and 2k, I gave each 2 ip's, the dsl is dhcp, and the second was 10.0.0.1, and 10.0.0.2. worked fine. XP won't let me do that. If I use the wizard, it warns me that it can't secure the connection properly. I've disabled built-in firewall and everything. Any ideas?
