multiple IPs in XP pro

How do I use multiple IP's in XP pro? I noticed the tab in network - alternate configuration, and added 10.0.0.1, but it doesn't show up in ipconfig, and I can't ping 10.0.0.2 through a hub. I dual-boot with 98, and 98 can see the other computer. weird?
