Multiple instances of programs are opening up

In Task Manager, there are a few programs that open two instances up at once when there is no need for it. I close one of them and it will go away from Task Manager for a while, but it always comes back. Right now, it's showing:

2 AVG Scanning Core Module (both owned by SYSTEM)
2 Client Server Runtime Process (both owned by SYSTEM)
2 Console Window Host (both owned by my user name)
2 Google Desktops (both owned by my user name)
2 Nvidia Driver Helper Service (both owned by SYSTEM)

All descriptions are the exact same as well and memory usage is very similar for the duplicates so I know they're just extra shit running for no reason. It's really annoying. It's slowing down my PC like you wouldn't believe.

All drivers for software and hardware are updated. No viruses, no malware, no spyware, no adware. Any ideas?

its normal, I would not worry about it.
And unless the cpu utilization for any of those are always running, I do not think that would the the cause of "It's slowing down my PC like you wouldn't believe."

Except for maybe google desktop depending on the specs of your machine

Disable AVG for a bit, and see if it stops happening. I've seen AVG do stranger things.

Aaaaand... replace it with MSE or Avira when you realize that it's what was causing the problems :) It's probably AVG slowing down your computer "like you wouldn't believe".

You can also try Avast Free .. I have it running on an old Dell 8200 P4 with 512Mb RAM
Doesn't take up much room at all and works great.

Furry, you hit the nail on the head. That's weird, I never would have guessed it was AVG! Man, that's my favorite anti-virus software, too... guess I'll start the search for something new. I've heard good things about Avast! so I'll check that out.
