Multiple instances of Outlook in Windows XP

I am fairly new to using Windows XP, so I don't know if this is a problem, but it doesn't seem right. When I check my email, I just open Outlook and close it back down when I am finished. The problem I noticed is that every tiime I open Outlook again, it shows up in the Task Manager as an additional process. Just now, I saw 15 instances of Outlook running because I haven't reboot in the past few days. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
