If I install 5-6 programs that requires restarts, does it make any difference if I opt not to restart until I've install everything and just restart after all the installation are done?
 
It depends on the applications themselves.

Some apps used shared resources (DLL, VXD etc. Files).
Installing while these shared resources are still in use can cause issues.

That is why most installers recommend that you shutdown all running apps.
