multiple explorer threads in winXP?

I remember way back I saw something about changing a registry setting in win2k so that if explorer crashed for some reason , it didn't lose all the icons in the system tray, etc. It had something to do with running multiple instances of explorer or something. Can this be done in XP, and if so, how is it done? If someone could point me in the right direction, that'd be great!
