Multiple Desktops in Windows XP - How???

Hey,

Well I was at a LAN party today, and this one guy had multiple desktops, the screen was split in 4, and he could select each one independantly, it was something I've never seen before. Although I asked him how he did that, he had no idea, all he knows is that it wasn't any 3rd party software, rather built into Windows, (he's not the most computer literate), but anyways, it was really interesting, I searched Windows help to no avail, along with the net, but it may have another name, that I may not know, so any help would be greatly appreciated...

right click on your taskbar
goto toolbars
click desktop manager

i found this to be useless after 10min & never used it again

its quite different in XP. basically it just minimizes/maximizes whatever you were doing last on that capture

but it is somewhat flexible, you can bind the Windows key + whatever as a shortcut to 1 out of 4 windows
also you can set different backgrounds for each window - can't think of a reason for doing it tho
 
I believe you have to have XP PowerToys to enable the virtual desktop feature. W/O the powertoys, you would not have the desktop manager option.

i believe you're right because I don't remember ever seeing it before XP Powertoys
 
Hrmm... well then... that's interesting, so you need PowerToys, I've yet to install that, but I guess my friend was wrong... but as mentioned, not the most computer literate person... excellent, thanks for the help.

If you want *nix style shere each desktop acts independently of eachother, uncheck "Shared Desktops" and then you wont have the same programs on each desktop. Personally, I find the feature quite useful after that.
