multiple boots to get XP to load?

A buddy bought my old PC (2GHz, 1GB, dual 80GB drives, 9800 pro) and he claims that he has to attempt to boot numerous times to get to the OS to load. Otherwise, he get the BSOD with some weird error about [size] among other things. Does anyone have ANY idea why this might be happening? When i had the PC it was solid for 3 years.
 
Without knowing the error on the bluescreen, anything posted here is 100% guesswork.

Get us the hexadecimal STOP code and the error text.
