Multiple audio streams using single audio stream sound card

Ok, here's the question. I have a sb live platinum 5.1, not the audigy ones, but the ones b4 the audigy term came into existence. Suppose I have real player open, and playing from it, winamp says that another thing is using the audio stream, and since I dont have a sound card that processes multiple streams, suggests me to get one that does. Vice verca is also true.

Now, suppose winamp is playing, I can open a windows explorer, say c:\my mp3 music\, single click on one of the files, and play it from the windows explorer. No complaints here. How does this happen?

Playing multiple streams in Windows is a function of DirectX's DirectSound API. Your WinAmp's configured for directsound output and (obviously) the windows explorer player does the same. It seems like Real Player isn't, though, and that's why you're getting some audio device audio in use error.

edit: What version of Real Player are you using? I just tried with 8.0 and it works fine (I *know* 6.0 didn't let me play two streams).
