Multiple audio inputs to receiver

I have a Pioneer VSX-523-K receiver, an HTPC, and a record player. The HTPC is connected to the receiver by HDMI and the record player has RCA output. I'd like to be able to use the record player and the HTPC at the same time.

If I plug the HTPC into the HDMI DVD input and the record player into the RCA DVD input then the receiver ignores the analog input for audio. Is there an elegant way to be able to get both to work at the same time? The only thing I can think of is to hook the HTPC's HDMI cable into the TV then use the TV's headphone output and a stereo miniplug splitter to pipe the HTPC's audio and record player's back through the receiver but there has to be a better way.

what do you mean at the same time? as in mixing the audio input of the two together? HDMI doesn't like that.

I don't believe your receiver's DVD input will act like a PHONO stage.

The very low output levels produced by MM or MC cartridges --> to line level voltages (1 volt output levels of CD players, DVD players, tape decks etc.) have a separate input, ie the PHONO stage.

The record player has a built in phono stage, plugging it into a different input and selecting it works just fine. What I would like to do is get the audio from the record player without having to give up the video input from the HTPC.

Record Player...I assume it's a Turntable...It needs PHONO-IN on receiver...if receiver doesn't have Phono-In, it needs PreAmp for Turntable...
Not one good TT has built-in preamp...

Another thing...you can not to hook up 2 devices to ONE receiver and use both at the same time - it's like onde driver drives 2 cars at the same time....

There are turntables with phono stage built in. All the ones with USB ports do because they have to convert it to line level first.

On my Marantz AV-9000 I am able to show video of one input and audio of another input as long as the second input is just audio.

However, op has HDMI, which has the dreaded HDCP, which prevents what op wants to do.

Is it possible to plug the record player's audio out into the HTPC line-in with the miniplug or RCA (if you have that input) and just turn on stereo mix in the HTPC audio settings? Seems like that would have both audio sources coming through the single HDMI input on the receiver then.

Of course the MPAA/RIAA would be to blame. Why does everything they touch have to turn to shit?
I was hoping the receiver would be smart enough to convert the HDMI into analog and then mix in the RCA but it doesn't seem to do that.

I briefly considered that but don't particularly want the analog signal passing through the electromagnetically noisy inside of my HTPC and don't really want the signal converted to digital and back to analog. If I wanted to listen to digital music I wouldn't have bothered with vinyl records.

Oh well.. Looks like there's a better receiver in your future.

i know my denon has a "video source" feature, so that after you set the main input to your phono input, you can toggle the "video source" to any other input, just for video. maybe your receiver has something like this?

Well the speakers do have dual binding posts... I suppose I could wait until I can afford a real amplifier and connect the record player by itself through that. :whiste:

I mean, what are you trying to do here exactly? Are you trying to have both your HTPC and record player play audio at the same time over the same speakers? To do that you need a mixing board to layer the two audio streams together.

If you simply want to listen to your records while displaying your HTPC on the TV (and maybe just have the TV do the HTPC's audio), you can do that with most video cards simply by running another HDMI line from your PC to the TV and switch the TV's input to watch that HDMI line while you let your receiver plays the records (and use the TV's speakers to play the HTPC's audio).

If you are anal about multiple wires going to your TV, get an HDMI Matrix Switch and connect your HTPC to one of the input's, and your receiver's TV out to another input, and your TV to one of the outputs and your receiver's HDMI in to another of the outputs. Then you can set it so that your HTPC plays on the the TV and/or the receiver at the same time, and that your TV can watch either the output of the receiver, or the HTPC.

But you can't simply layer in the audio devices together, unless you want to use a line-out from your HTPC to get analog audio and connect both the record player and the line-out from the HTPC to a mixing board, and connect that to your receiver. (Edit: well you can mix the digital audio out from the HTPC with the phono, but you are now talking much more expensive mixing boards which support HDCP HDMI connections, or ones which support S/PDIF, and your HTPC supports audio out over S/PDIF).

Figured it out.

video through HDMI from HTPC to TV, TOSLINK from HTPC to receiver. Now I can switch the speakers from the HTPC to the record player without losing the video feed to the TV and if I wanted both to play audio at the same time I can switch from the TOSLINK to the HDMI audio on the HTPC.

Good for you. I am surprised hdcp did not kick your ass.
