Ok, here's my setup: I just recently purchased 2 Linksys WRT54G's in hopes of using the Sveasoft firmware to make them into APs and bridges (to save some money). I put the Sveasoft firmware on each one, and everything's working fine. Here's my current setup (pre-WRT54G):
Internet-->DSL Modem in bridge mode-->Vonage Router-->Netgear 802.11b Router/AP doing DHCP
Everything on this setup works fine. All of my clients can see the internet and each other. Now I'm going to introduce 1 of the WRT54G's. I disabled DHCP, gave it a LAN IP address in the same range as my existing subnet, set it's gateway to be that of the Netgear Router, and plugged it into the Netgear router on one of it's LAN ports. When I did this, I fired up my new Dell XPS laptop with 54G Wireless, and was able to connect to the 54G network (the SSIDs are different, so I know that's the one I'm connecting to). I get an IP from my Netgear DHCP server, and can see the internet fine. I can also ping other clients on my network by IP, however I can't see them by name. So, let's say Server1 is 192.168.1.10. My laptop is 192.168.1.15. I can ping 192.168.1.10 from my laptop, but cannot resolve Server1.
Ok, so now since I have that setup *sort of* working, I decide to try to connect my other WRT54G. I have it configured to be on the same SSID as the first one, but this one is setup to be in Client Mode only, connecting to the other WRT54G. DHCP is disabled, and it has a LAN IP address in the same range. I connect my laptop to one of the LAN ports on the second WRT54G, and disable the wireless card. I renew my IP address, and get one from my Netgear DHCP server. I can get to the internet. I verified that my wireless card is disabled, so I know that my IP address and internet connection are indeed coming over this WRT54G in client mode. However, I cannot ping any clients on my network, by IP address OR name. Occasionally, I can get a response or 2 when I ping, but 95% of the time I get time outs, even though my internet connection works flawlessly. These APs are in the same room, about 5 feet apart, so I don't think there is any interference. They are on the same SSID and same channel. No encryption is being used.
So, what could be the problem(s)? It looks like I have a couple going on here. Have I fubared something? Why can't I resolve names on my 54G wireless network? Why can't I ping clients on my bridged connection? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
