I play a game a couple of times a week, always single player. I want to try a multiplayer game but I don't want to get a game that I won't enjoy due to my lack of experience in multiplayer games, or games in general. What game would you recommend?

I enjoy the following single player games:

Bioshock
GTA (all of them)
Tomb Raider (the new one)
Peggle

dungeon defenders
minecraft
saints row 3
maybe magicka
maybe l4d2

stay away from day z.

I would start with a coop game, just because you have 3 adventure/action type games listed. You could also pick up Just cause 2 and play in the multiplayer beta weekend. There's one scheduled in about 8 days. Might be a good teaser for the type of gameplay in the GTA multiplayer game.

edit: i agree with guy above. tf2 is a pretty good choice too!
edit 2: There's also marvel heroes which is also free to play. http://store.steampowered.com/app/226320/

If you do decide to play tf2 you might want to run threw the ingame tutorials first and I would recommend a new player to play on the official valve servers because they are pretty noob friendly. Stay away from any 24x7 servers until you can hold your own as they have more veterans in them.

Left 4 Dead 2 if you like working together or want to be better in multiplayer games, or Killing Floor if you want to just mindlessly knock the **** out of some zeeks :)

Another casual game is Terraria, I'd recommend it. Pretty fun

For Casual you could do Nation Red, its brainless but fun over beers.

I think the current gold standard for PC mp is the ones mentioned already in this thread, L4D and TF2. Either one you can jump right in and have fun. Of course TF2 has a lot of depth but anyone can simply join as a soldier or heavy and just follow your teammates, shooting at whatever they shoot at.

You could try an MMO like World of Warcraft, free at low levels.

WoW is an awesome game. I only have two gripes with it:

1) The people who play it are generally hard to play with. That is, they play too much and I can't keep up, so then I never have people to play with.

2) The $15/month price. Yes, this is worth it if you play 50+ hours a week like most WoW nerds play, but when you play more like 5 hours a week like I'd do, it's a ripoff.

Other than that, I think it's one of the best games ever made.

L4D2 can be pretty brutal towards new players. Noobs usually get kicked pretty fast.

OP, if you like strategy games take a look at Open RA. It is a free port of Command and Conquer Red Alert.

TF2 is ok. Its free so what can you say.

Try BZFlag. Basic tank battle game with very easy controls. It's simple to learn how to move, jump and pickup and drop flags (that enhance your tanks). There is a lot of room to master the flags and understand their benefits and disadvantages in the arena. The community is smallish, and it can be tough on beginners since many people that play are very facile movers. but the learning curve isn't as bad as a Team Fortress or BF3 environment.

You can read in the tutorials at BXFlag.org. The downloads and all play are free, and because the environment is fairly compact. it's fairly action packed. You can play for 2 minutes or two hours and the application startup time is about 10 seconds...instant snack or meal sized gratification...

Considering the price of other entertainment ($10 for a movie that lasts two hours) you really only need to play a $15/mo MMORPG for about 2 hours per month before it costs less than other shit.

Even consider another PC game...you get, what, 20 hours of gameplay for $60. That's 4 months, or an average of 5 hours per month.

Not sure where you get 50+ hours per week from.
