I purchased Nero 9 last year and after much frustration just went back to Nero 8. I recently decided to try 9 again after 8 was giving me some problems and figured they had probably put out a few updates since then. They have but it didn't matter there is still issues with it.

So I am reluctant to buy Nero 10 and was wondering if the new version of Roxio is better or if anyone had another opinion on multimedia suites out there?

You just need to burn CDs/DVDs and stuff? What exactly did you use Nero to do? "Multimedia Suite" is a pretty broad phrase.

I use it for cds and dvds yes. I also use it for encoding audio and video files. I make dvd movies with it. I do cover art for them as well. I also use it for regular and hi def dvd viewing. Other then that I use the other features here and there. Pretty much the features in nero I use and I also experiement and try out the ones I don't use that often as well.

Well, if you're comfortable with Nero give the free trial a go...and then buy the upgrade license if everything works well.

My list of free alternatives:
Media playback: Windows Media Player/Center, VLC, MPC-HC
Video editing/DVD creation: Windows Live Movie Maker
Video encoding/transcoding: Avidemux, Handbrake, FormatFactory
Audio editing: Audacity
Audio ripping: Windows Media Player, Foobar, CDex, EAC, dbpoweramp, etc, etc...
Audio burning: Same as above
General burning: CDBurnerXP, DeepBurner Free, ImgBurn, Windows built-in
Backup: (don't use DVDs for this) External HDD + CrashPlan, SyncToy, Cobian, etc, etc...
