It's a good deal for moms computer (unless mom plays counterstrike) I know the sound card is supposed to be really good for a cheapo, and you don't have to worry about a power cord with those speakers (USB powered) just don't expect to jam Barry Manilow and shake the walls. The CD-rom............Genica is a pretty lousy brand to start with, now add that it's refurbished....ick.

I think this thread is discussing the relative merits of this sound card in all of it's variants.

Decided to get it & some other stuff to complete a partial machine I have been working on. Not bad to complete a simple system.

As far as Genica is concerned, I'll risk my $ on this before one of the Newegg "some do, some don't, some will, most won't" deals.

Well, let me add my $0.02 about this soundcard. I bought it for my mom's new system I have built. To make a long story short; WinXP pro flat out refused to recognize it. Even after I downloaded and installed XP drivers, it still would not detect the sound card. What I found really interesting is that provided driver was digitally signed by Microsoft as recommended for WinXP. Hmmmmmm...... Oh well, I went out and bought a Phillips card instead, and had no troubles installing it, even though a warning popped up telling me that a driver I was installing was not digitally signed and therefore not recommended by MS. Go figure... Then again, we're talking about MS product here. Oh yes, there is a happy ending to this story, that C-Media card found new home in my son's Win98 machine, lol.
