Multimedia authoring tools similar to Macromedia's?

Hello,

I hope someone here can help me with this. I am creating a multimedia CD. This is a one shot deal, so I do not want to have to buy expensive authoring software, such as those from Macromedia. Also, I do not have the finances for it.

Want I want to do is this: I want an auto-run CD with a menu system that pops up. I want the menu background to be a custom image with buttons placed where I want them.

The buttons will bring up folders from the CD or images. I also want an exit button that will close the menu system.

Does anyone know of a cheap, simple to use program out there? Or better yet, a free program?

I don't know of any programs at all that will let you do that.

The only thing i can think of is to program it yourself using some visual language like VisualBasic.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any visual languages that you can get legally for free.
