I am switching my accounting software over to Quickbooks or Peachtree, one or the other I have not decided yet but leaning towards quickbooks. Currently I run a single user program on one machine. I was thinkin adding up to four users total.

The hardware I have now:

1 - pc with amd64 2800+ 754skt with 512mb ddr400, 80gb 7200rpm, 120gb external usb hard drive for backups.

3 - intel and amd computers 900mhz 256mb ram

linksys wireless router - all computers above networked peer to peer home type network with cable internet access.

Is it possible to run the amd64 with server os, running the application server program on it with the other 3 as clients. Also is it possible to run a client instance of the program on the server so we can work at the server as well instead of having to buy a separate server. I know that it would not be recommended but would it work alright. I could add more memory to the amd64 also if that would help any.

Will the router I have also be sufficient.

Just re-read some requirements:

Multi-user requirements:

Win 2000 server
Win Server 2003
Window 2000/XP peer to peer

At first I though I might have to run a server os, but after reading I would rather keep Windows Xp installed and run muli-user in a peer to peer network.

After all that I still wonder if all my hardware would be sufficient in a peer to peer network all with windows XP. I'm assuming one of the machines will still emulate a server which I would use the AMD 64 of course.

I feel ya on that. But on the otherhand I did order my quickbooks 5 user package. I will try it out on my current setup and see how it runs. I believe I'm gonna go ahead and order some more pc133 memory for those older computers. Not sure if it would help putting in faster harddrive access on the computer doing the hosting.

One thing is that all computers won't be heavy used at all times. The one that is hosting will be the most heavily used pc. Also I'm getting another amd64 2800+ and an athlon 2400+ pc that I built awhile back from a location I have in costa rico. Shutting that location down so i get some more hardware coming in about a month.

it doesn't really matter what hardware you use Quickbooks will run like crap. save yourself trouble and use peachtree from the start.

I second that. Having used QB for many years switched over to Peachtree (mainly because the new controller was more familiar with it) and it has been hassle and trouble free, often the package is free but you do have to pay for annual maint. Although I am running windows server 2000 for erp, we have kept the accounting part separate (only 3 users), with the main data in Controller's pc which he uses all the time and two support positions (who use it part of day) whose pcs are mapped to the main pc. Athough I have newer pcs now, this set up ran fine on old dells/compaqs with celeron processors/minimal mem/win98 etc. I do back the data freq elsewhere.

I run Multiple versions (7) of QB's on terminal server 2003 Dual PIII 993 with 1GB of RAM with up to 8 people on it at any one time. There is no real difference between running it on the TS or my 3Gz Dell with 512 RAM.

I already purchased quickbooks. I though quickbooks might be a little more user friendly for the staff to learn.

it is user friendly but as your qb file grows it will run worse and worse. good luck with it though.
