Multi monitor - DirectX issues? (multi dispaly and GPU scaling?)

We have a 2x2 LCD Tile display in the lab here at the university. It is powered by a Athlon 4000+, 2gb memory, 2x 6800 Ultras. We tried to get NASA Worldwind software to work and it just CRAWLS on this setup. The mouse doesn't even move smoothly when the program is open. 100% CPU usage at all times. We installed Google Earth and got it to work - although it doesn't maximize to all 4 screens it still fills over 3/4 of the display area. In OpenGL mode it runs quite smooth (20-30fps) where when I change it to DirectX it chokes in the same way that it did in Worldwind.

Does DirectX just not scale well over multiple displays and multiple GPUs?

Pic of the setup

Well, I can't get it to go full screen - it just shrinks the display area if I go above the res that you see in the pic. I saved the image as a file through Google Earth and it looks like the display area is running at 2908x1878.

Our dual 7800GTXs just came in today, so I might give them a whirl.

(edit) The res of the entire setup is 3200x2400
