Any idea's?
I don't need to network it, or use a RAID configuration (added bonus I suppose).
It does need to house several (say 4 1TB SATA drives) HDD's so I can back up all the data I've accumulated on my presently 4 computers (a 5th on the way) into one location that can be easily turned off and disconnected and reconnected as needed.
Would a SATA backplane designed for internal use be usable as an external eSATA device?

If you have multiple systems then why not get an NAS? Why limit yourself to eSATA and having to move the system form PC to PC?

For starters I didn't know what a NAS was until I just now looked it up on Wiki. LOL.
I attempted networking 2 computers together once about 4 years ago with abject failure. Never ventured another effort.

Perhaps I'll look into this further...

Of course moving a eSata external device from one system to another would only require me to get out on my chair, and move one eSata cable from one computer to another. Estimated time of effort, about 30 seconds - LOL. I know - that's the half assed approach, but with my present lack of computer savvy it's an acceptable work around.

Thanks for your reply.
Appreciated :)

Setting up a network isn't a big deal. Iff all the system share a routyer to receive internet then you pretty much have everything you need. Make sure each system requires a login and password. Then run the Network setup wizard on one and follow the instructions. Then run it on al the other computers and you should be all set.

Both www.pc-pitstop.com and scsi4me.com have both SCSI and SATA multi-drive enclosures in many sizes. Their prices may not be the best, but their focus is on what you're looking for. I got a sale notice from scsi4me recently, but can't locate it - I generally delete mail that isn't of current interest. I think I recall seeing some new brand of HDD chassis somewhere too, but can't recall. A backplane setup may require a special controller to handle it.
