asus p9x79-e ws (or any other multi plx motherboard) can allocate pcie3 16x/8x/8x/8x/16x/8x/8x.

love to run aaa games at 4k eyefinity / surround in true 12k.
of course with all the eye candy and with minimum 60fps dip...

baseline is: 290x/980 x2.5 is sufficient for 3k.
prediction is: 290x/980 x10 for 12k.
expectation is: since 390x/titanx is 1.5x of 290x. that mean will need x6.7.

7 gpu should get the job done.

le what?

I know your post is most likely a joke post... but it's kind of a failed joke, because P9X79-WS does not electrically support more than quad x8 PCIe, not to mention the fact that even if it did, it couldn't physically allocate seven expansion cards anyway

I think windows can individually recognize up to 8 graphics adapters (linux is considerably more). But there is no driver out that supports over 4X GPU in SLI/Xfire.

Obviously what I was saying was that there is no driver that supports sli or crossfire of more than 4 individual gpu's. UaVaj, I'm surprised you weren't aware of this limitation.

could this be a matter of having the proper sli/xfire profile ??

I suppose thats what it is. Considering there is no profile that exists in this universe that allows for more than 4 GPU's to be teamed together.

Windows will recognize additional cards though even if they are not part of the CF/SLI setup. Though they wont be doing anything at that point.....

If its still not clear to you why this will never work, I suggest you go on this site called google and do research on how SLI/CF works.

please do link.
google is coming up with nothing relevant.
a simply "why" it is limited to 4.

did amd/nvidia simply decide to stop writing profile for more than 4 gpu? after all - anyone wanting "more" than 1 or 2 gpu is far and few.
or is there a hardware limitation? sli bridge? or xdma pcie link?
or something else?

being able to sli/xfire "7" titanx/390x would truly bring "no compromise" 11520x2160 surround/eyefinity into reality.
no compromise = aaa games, all the eye candy, 60fps absolute minimum.

current setup. still stuck on 5760x1080 cause 290x x4 is not capable of pushing anything higher. 980 x4 is no better.

upgrade setup. looks like titanx/390x x4 might be able to clear the 7680x1440 surround/eyefinity hurdle.

ideal setup. 11520x2160 is still out of reach with only 4 titanx/390x.

They dont make drivers that support more than 4 GPU's because its more effort than its worth to them. Most people will never have more than 2 cards anyway, and the amount of effort required to make a driver scale well above 4 GPU's isnt worth the return of people buying more than 4 cards.

Could DX12 help change this?
