Multi-Computers SETI

I was wondering if there is any way that i could configure the BONIC to run as a one appliation across ten different systems? If anybody do know how could you please point me in the right direction? Thanks

Do you mean you just want to use the same account on 10 different computers? Or are you looking to only install the app on 1 computer but use the resources of all 10 computers to do the processing?

If you just want to use the same account on all computers then i would assume you can just install & setup BOINC the same on all computers. I'm not running any BOINC projects so i'm not sure if there's anything special you need to do to setup multiple computers on 1 account.

If it's the other thing you're looking to do, i'd guess that couldn't be done.

Probably, others running BOINC would be better able to explain how to set things up.

This is what I meant. If anybody know how, this would be great since I have some old systems I would like to dedicate to SETI. Thanks.

I'm not up to speed on BOINC's capabilities, Rattledagger should be along to help. Although nothing I've seen suggests that it would share the resources amongst 10 PCs.

Basically what we do is install SETI as an app on each PC, make sure the same user account is being used, and let them crunch away! 😀

Don't no if anyone has done the work to have BOINC operate like a beowolf cluster or not.

Happy crunching!

Can BOINC be told to use an arbitrary number of threads, regardless of the number of CPUs that it detects in a system? If so, then it might be possible to make an OpenMosix network with BOINC installed on only one of the systems, where the BOINC client would make enough threads so that the load balancing mechanism of OpenMosix would distribute them evenly across all of the systems.

I tried to do this with Cluster Knoppix 3.6 and wasn't able to pull it off. I'm interested to know if anybody else has.

btw: I installed the Cluster Knoppix CD to the HD, so that's not the problem.

The BOINC FAQ states that the client will support both physical and logical processors on a multi-cpu host, so there is hope if you can define other system CPU as logical processors.

I haven't found a practical limit on the physical yet, as I had a chance to load the client(as a test) on an 8-way p3-700 Xeon box. 🙂

I'm still trying to snag one for home. 😀

Networkman, the top computer in SETI@Home/BOINC is a 64-way Silicon Graphics IP35, so an 8-way Xeon will be on the small side in comparison. 😉

As for installing, the normal is one BOINC-client per computer, and this will automatically detect #cpu's and run as many copies of seti-application or other projects as #cpu's if not limited by preference-setting... and if you've downloaded enough wu. Not sure if any other method is possible, if so it's because multiple boxes is reported as one and having N cpu's...

You can't start more processes than you've got #cpu's, real or virtual.

So in general I can't just cluster my computer to run on a specific thread? I see, in this sense, I should just go ahead and download BONIC and run it as its own but under my account? I just want to be able to run a proccess as a thread across all of my system. Oh Drat... I guess I'll have to wait and see what else I can do about it. I might as well email SETI and ask them the questions and see if they can help me out here. So far nothing in their FAQs have anything about this. Thank guys for your input though.

I had a 16-way 386 system some years back made by Unisys, but it wasn't economical to keep running.. sold it for a profit though. 😎
