Multi computer processing power...

I was wondering if instead of using mulitple machines to do mulitple tasks like assigning each machine a task, you would have a multiple machine farm and have the "collective mass" do all the different tasks... Like you would have the collective machine be a web server, file server, fax server, e-mail server, etc.. instead of assigning each machine a task..

i have a 10 cpu beowulf cluster that i built about 5 years ago.
they are disklisk machines. pentium 3 550's overclocked to about 800mhz.
i used to use it for seti and other things.
basicly just a big toy. i turned it off a year or so ago.
but its still pretty much all there.
