Mulling over a couple job opportunities

Well it looks like I'm finally making some headway in my post-grad job search. I've been contacted about a Systems Support Specialist position at BJs Wholesale, and also a Systems Trainee position at a medium-sized bank in Boston.


Pro's of Support Spec. Position:
-Ability to work my way up in a large corporation
-Gain some usable IT experience
-Better pay than my current job (Blockbuster)
-25 min. Commute

Con's
-Could take years before I move up in the ranks
-Corporate Politics


Pro's of System Trainee Position:
-Better opportunity most likely
-Training provided
-Tuition reimbursement and other miscellaneous benefits

Con's
-45 to 50 minute daily commute to Boston (bleh)


I don't like the idea of a Boston commute, but it does seem like a better opportunity than the Help Desk position. Any advice?

personally I enjoy driving, and i would definitely take the bank job

but then again, I am a child of LA Traffic 🙂

I would pick the one that has lots of hot chicks around for eye candy, or (covering my ass in case you are gay or a female) I would pick the one that has the most hottie dudes for eye candy.

Yeah take the bank one for sure. I'd choose the one with more growth, even if the current pay wasn't was much(but unsure if that's the case right now with you)

depending on what direction you are comming from the commute into boston isnt that bad, its pretty easy if you stop at the closest MBTA station to you and ride that or the commuter rail in

UPDATE (4/6):

Today I interviewed for the Systems Trainee position (The Bank Position). The HR person I spoke with discussed the job, training, etc. Everything went pretty well. There were a couple issues that concern me though.

1) She said that for the first few months, I would be doing coding, QA, and other miscellaneous things. The job description didn't mention anything regarding programming, and I don't have much familiarity with it. I told her this, and asked her if she had any hesitations regarding this. She said it shouldn't be a problem, since classroom training supposedly covers it (I'm a Business Information Systems Grad). Part of the reason I chose to be a BIS major was that it focused around Business/System's, etc. rather than coding, it's not something that interests me. So this made me a little hesitant, especially since the 2nd interview I'll have with them is supposedly the "technical" one.


2. She asked me if I was currently interviewing with any other places. This kind've threw me off guard. I told her yes. Mistake?

3. She told me that the salary for the position is TBD, but it should fall around the 35k range, how is this for a college grad undertaking his first entry-level position?

brush up on your programming for the 2nd interview, its really hard to find the your "ideal" IT job these days.

35k is about right for entry level (i'm same boat as you and making 35K with benefit deductions)
