Mulitple instances of SETI and multiple computer problems...

Ok, I have two questions:

1) When I leave my Windows XP box idle for a few hours and SETI is running, I come back to 10 or 12 instances of SETI in my tray, but once I mouse over one, they all disapeer (much like when you end-task a program to get rid of the icon). What is this, and is there a way to get rid of it?

2) Is there a problem with running multiple computers under one e-mail address? I have 3 computers I want to run, but is it safe to run them all under my single e-mail?

Can't help you with the first problem but on the second problem you can run seti on as many machines as you want with one account. In fact we want you to run it on as many machine as you can :Q

Yep running it on several machines under one email address is legal and it is the way that many of our members put up such big numbers each day.

The first question is a mystery to me. Are you using setidriver? If so do you have the "hide processing" option checked?

I'm not sure, but I think if you upgrade your Windows XP to Windows 2000, your problem will disappear😉

I've seen several little things on the taskbar in Win98 but they are blank and when I click them they disappear.
Never seen what you have, and I have one machine with XP.
If you bring up task manager before getting rid of them does it show any info for them?

LMAO @ Is0s

I bet he has not put a check mark in "Hide Processing" ... again agreeing with Baldy18. 😀

This has happened to me as well. Usually happens when my screen powers down. Is that when it happens with you?

See this thread for your answer to question # 1, hopefully. 🙂

As for your 2nd question, you could do it, but it will work better if your use my email address. 😉
j/k, yeah, get as many as you want under your email address. Get permission if they're not yours.

Good luck!

Ah yes, the SETI@home system tray icon problem!

I'm surprised that we didn't add a FAQ question on this (I'll add one today).

Basically, in newer versions of Windows, if the screensaver is killed via
CTL-ALT-DEL or some other "hard" closing mechanism, the SAH process
still tries to access the application, and unfortunately plants an icon in the
system tray _before_ it realizes the app's dead, then keeps doing this ad
nauseum. Moving your mouse over the system tray will make the icons
disappear. No performance problems or otherwise. It should only
happen if the screensaver app gets killed in an abnormal way.

Nice find, Spacehead 😀
