Mulch at Home Depot - any brand that keep their color fairly well?

I am looking to get some mulch and was going to go with black mulch so it stays darker than the brown stuff I usually get. They had some stuff on sale that is like $10 for 4 bags of 2cu ft. But after reading reviews of that stuff, it looks like I won't be getting it based on the general consensus that the color is crap and it fades after the first rain.

But I really have no clue what brands are decent or where to get good mulch. I have a HD right down the street from me too so they are really convenient, and I need to get a lot so I'll need to borrow my mom's van and take multiple trips.

Anyone have any brands from HD they recommend that are of decent quality and keep their color for a decent time?

How much is a lot? In the state I used to live, we could buy it by the yard and have it delivered. No bags, just a pile dropped in the driveway.

I'm going to take a guess that mulch in bags is a regional thing and a brand that's good in your area is not even available in other areas and because of that, you're not going to get any worthwhile responses.

Having said that I bought two bags of red at the local Ace Hardware and it's held its color just fine for the past eight months.

How much do you need? A bag won't cover much, so unless it's just a single small bed or strip you should look at having a mulch or landscaping materials place deliver a truckload. Drop a tarp in the driveway, dump there, move with a wheelbarrow. Probably $25-30 per cubic yard, or about 10-35% cheaper than the bags, and you can probably get a 6 to 10-yard single load.

You'll come out way ahead if you need a considerable amount of mulch. If you need a lot, get it by the truckload, it's much cheaper that way. Just dump it in the driveway and go from there.

If you dont need that much, estimate how many bags you'll need, then double it ;)

Edit: Oh, and dont put mulch on too much of a slope, or places where water likes to accumulate/runoff. You'll find it down the street/in your yard/the neighbors yard/anyplace but where you want it :)

One thing I found interesting is that when I calculated HD mulch cost compared to lawn guys mulch cost it turned out better for HD one.

The quality - well it is probably worse due to being bagged in plastic vs fresh 'composty' one.

If you can find it, Happy Brook cedar mulch is really good. I was only able to find it at one Home Depot a couple of years ago and none around here carry it anymore, but it smelled awesome and the black color lasted a long time, plus there was no filler material.

Black looks nice. I've done it for the last few years, but this year I'm gonna change it up and do natural cedar mulch with a ~4" wide border of black mulch. Should match my house color and shutters pretty well.

Around here it cost anywhere from $40 to 100 to have any kind of landscaping material delivered, depending on how far you are from the supplier. If you just get a couple yards of mulch you'll pay more for delivery.

The cheap black and brown from HD turn to topsoil in 2-3 years and do fade quickly. Long term, best value is red cedar. It'll just cost more up front but the cost/year is lower. That is unless you want mulch turning into topsoil, say if you have a lot of clay in your soil.

Around here mulch from HD is cheaper than buying in bulk. No idea about the quality, I assumed it was all the same.

I ended up getting 3 yards of black dyed delivered from a place 10 minutes away for like $160. 3 yards was quite a bit more than I needed though so now I have to give away some shit. I probably have like 3/4 - 1 yard extra sitting in my driveway still after mulching this morning.
