I just installed straight pipes on my car, as I was not about spend $2,000 on a pair of mufflers. After about 45 minutes, I was completely de-balled and happy. It's a lot louder, but not 'open header' loud, as there is 4 cats and a resonator before the mufflers. It's definately quiter than your average classic muscle car, and as a bonus it's got a great burble when you get off the throttle.

I bet that sounds nice alright. I ran my GTO without mufflers when I was changing them, heh, not quite something I would want to drive around with. Would sound like a NASCAR race everytime I go anywhere

Anything other then stock exhaust here in cali gets you stopped but I did run my 70 bug with a straight pipe stinger for 3 years. Never got stopped once.

$2000 on mufflers?

...I spent about $85 replacing my stock one with a Dynomax. Sounds great, never had an issue with cops. :)

There's a guy running absolutely nothing after the cat on his WRX in my neighborhood, sounds horrible and is extremely illegal in FL.

He was also running on a donut for about 2 months. I did my duty in informing him that both were bad and harmful to the Subaru community, he didn't seem to get the joke.

Hah, I upgraded my Supra to a 3" exhaust since the stock w/ integrated exhaust was getting plugged. No matter what I put on in terms of muffler, it sounds like an outboard. I need to find something that will help. Would a second muffler upstream as a resonator help, you think?

EDIT: To be more clear, yes, I'm still running a cat. No way I'd pass VA emissions w/o it.

I'm always concerned when a product supports a car before it was even made ;). Z4 M was only from 06-08. Also, the exhaust is completely different from the 2.5 to the 3.0 to the M, so it's just a generic offset. It would probably come out looking like a Civic with a crooked exhaust pointing at a 45 degree angle to the bumper ;)

So you're the one who kept me from getting the custom license plate I've always wanted!

Yeah, but $2,000 is $1,500 off MSRP!

Note that is just for two cans, nothing else.

I have the same problem with exhaust systems for my M3. Just because it's a BMW, somehow it's ok to charge a completely unrealistic price for a muffler.

Example

It's insanity, IMHO. Just like pretty all the mods. RPi has very reasonable pricing, but I don't know if they make an e9x M3 muffler.

Were the OEM mufflers shot or just hung to low for your liking??. Maybe you could sell them on
CL and make some of your $$$ back. Does look nicer though..

Most people in the BMW forums just put your generic Magnaflows and call it a day. There are of course a few ballers who sport the eisenmann and remus stuff.

I thought the stainless Bassani cat back was expensive for my car at $700... and thats for like the best one out there.

Having a BMW emblem on the trunk lid sounds like a pain in the ass.

BMW tax is absurd. $2-3k for a muffler?

I would never buy new muffler anyways. Just buy a slightly used one for like 40% of the cost of a new one. People go through lot of mufflers to get the sound they want and you can usually buy it for pretty cheap used. I paid $600 for a used GHL with 3k miles which retails for $1,400. It's 20 lbs lighter than the stock exhaust so I'm happy.

Here's what I said about the subject in a BMW forum:

The Eisenmann may have been designed by NASA and manufactured out of some pure titanium alloy by robotic assemblers in a cleanroom, and it may be built to tolerances so exact that it would take new theories of quantum mechanics to spot imperfections, but it's still just a muffler and some fancy chrome tips that cost $2600. It could be the absolute best muffler that will ever be built in all of automotive history, but is it *really* worth $2600? Let's put this into perspective: I could just about buy a Mac Pro for that, or a pretty good flatscreen tv, or a set of fully assembled AFR aluminum cylinder heads for an LS1 engine.

Someone has got to be making about $2000 profit on this, at least.

It doesn't have tips like the other one does. It only costs what, $30/tip to weld some on at the right angle?

Sorry, I couldn't read the rest of the thread. My eyes glazed over and I seem to be disoriented after seeing the words, "$2000 mufflers"
