Ha,

Writing this from Mozilla...

I've set up dozens of servers based on NT(All flavors), W2K servers and Advanced servers, and even 2 W2K3 servers. But never a Linux server. So, today I set up a firewall/DHCP/NAT/Proxy server to our office using Mandrake 9.1 distro... and yes, it works. Still fiddling around with some settings and updates, but it's up and running.

It's running on an "old" IBM Netfinity/ dual P3 Xeon box (for those interested...)

Hah, I think I just became a new Linux fan 😀

Ha, 1996 I set up the first server to this office. The comp (Digital 6000 series) is still in the storage room... And it ran NT4 server... Linux back in 1996, no way any self respecting business would be running Linux... 😉

Linux is basically Unix ported to the x86 environment.

Unix knew a graphical environment (X-Windows) long before Microsoft had one.

No. Linux is a unix clone -- same console commands as unix and a number of GUI window manager to make it like most modern OS's, but as I understand it (not a linux user but I've considered taking the plunge for a while) it is a reimplimentation of many UNIX features and the command line style, although I believe you can change that in linux (and unix too).

I installed my first Linux distro (Slackware) in 1992.
