I hadn't heard of this until just today, apparently on track for a Q3 release.

Yes it's actually a card game, and not just some game based in the magic universe. Cards as old as Invasion and as new as Shards of Alara (NOTE: does not contain full sets like MTG: Online, however you also don't pay for the cards in this game, just the one time cost of the client). From what I gather there are limitations on mechanics/deck building, however it's looking to be a good way for people who haven't played Magic before to learn some of the rules, or even a supplement to the more experienced Magic players.

Personally I never really bought into the whole having to buy digital cards for Magic Online, so this interest me.

Also for those of you who thing Magic is "too nerdy" I urge you to give it a chance, I used to be the same way until my friend introduced me to it in High School. It really is a deep and engaging game, trust me.

Wow! It is looking good! Much MUCH better than Magic: Battlegrounds!

I love the Yu-Gi-Oh! style gameplay as well so I'm definitely looking forward to this.

Is it supposed to have the story mode with the map from the PC version or is just straight up CCG?

Wow interesting. I used to play this constantly at tournaments back in the late 90s. I was pretty good. I played MTGOnline for awhile but didn't agree with the pricing structure. I wonder how limited this will be. It would be great if they came out with this then dlc card sets where you could buy the whole set for a few dollars. As long as the mechanics are the same or close. I'm down with this.

Here's a video I found of an earlier build (video posted in January).

YouTube

Biggest limitations seem to be:
1) You can't react to damage on the stack! If I interpret this correctly then this could be a pretty big minus for this game. From the video it looks like you can react after attackers/blockers are declared, but not after their damage is assigned. Personally I'm not sure how much I'd do that (my Magic strategies are a little fuzzy since I haven't played since Mirrodin, however I have recently been looking to get back into it, and that's when I stumbled upon this).

2) You can't completely build your own deck. You find several pre-made decks in the game, and that video says you're limited to swapping out at most 17 cards. Hopefully this is just something in an early build that will be removed or loosened up in the final release.

I have a feeling there will be tons of DLC - as if CCG players need another money pit!

It's exciting that Xbox Live Arcade has opened the door for so many tabletop games (good ones) to cross over to console gaming. Dungeon Twister is another one that's coming to XBLA, and Settlers of Catan is coming out on the DS (maybe already out in Europe; not sure if a US release is planned, but I hope so).

It'll most likely be cheaper than the card game... Although these publishers will surprise you.

My roommates and I love settlers of catan. Any way of playing it without setting up the board would be great.

Heh. Memory lane. I haven't played magic since the original PC Duels was around. Still got a big bag of second edition to ice age cards around.

The campaign was fun. Get the right artifact, make a 61 card deck and all construction limits go out the window. Then farm the right monsters to clone the evil cards.
The last boss had 1000 hps, and I reduced him to -300. That was fun.

To put things in perspective they're getting ready to release 11th edition which is going to be named Magic 2010.

I actually just downloaded the original Duels game to see what it's about. A modding community has grown up around it to support newer cards.
