MTA: 1 HJB417: 0 - freakin MTA stole $50 from me

so yesterday I had to go out to buy a firewire card. instead of using the car, I decided to buy a 30day metro card (I can commute to work using the train) since mine expired a few days ago.
I put in my select unilimited 30 day, put in my metro card and the machine spits out a 7-day unlimited for $21. I was kinda pissed because I though I chose the 30day unlimited for $70. I went to the clerk and he said there was nothing I could do, so I just accepted my mistake and went on w/ my business. Today, I check my online account and I see 2 charges

11/8/2003 DEBIT DDA DEBIT $70.00
11/8/2003 DEBIT DDA DEBIT $38.01

I only used the card twice that day, 1 for a $35 firewire card, and the other for the metrocard. So I was basically charged $70 by the mta, even though my receipt says $21 for a 7-day unlimited. I call the mta#, and they said, send in the card you bought, the receipt, and any other proof you had, give us 3~4 weeks to investigate and have a nice day. So now I'm gonna be out of a metrocard, and $70. So I pretty much got owned twice. I'm gonna check the mta dispensder today and see what it rings up as. hopefully it will show up as a 30day, even though the receipt says 7day. Why can't the program the system correctly to begin w/. Because of this reason, I don't want them to shutdown anymore clerk booths.

Call them up again, and tell them this is unacceptable. Talk to a manager. Tell them you have bills to pay. If they don't agree let them know you're going to the Better Business Bureau.

dispute the charge on your credit card.

I'm always curious about this. If its a debit card, theres no way to dispute the charge, is there?

If it's a debit card, dispute it saying it was fraud. As far as you're concerned, the MTA is stealing your CC#. Debit cards don't really have a 'dispute' process, but they DO have fraud protection, and you, as of now, have been defrauded by the MTA.

interestingly enough, The mta machine says it's a 30day card. Tried it on the bus and subway today. Good stuff I guess. I dunno why the receipt says 7day w/ $21
It might be someone else's receipt but the timestamp on the receipt was around the time I bought the thing. Well, at least I was charged for what I wanted,,,,,

Thx 4 the input guys

hard to do in some places, look downtown and you'll see. Easy to get away with at 103st and 110st though. probably 116st too.

Where there's a will there's a way 😛

Seriously HJB417, dispute the charge w/ your financial institution 🙂
