So I'll be down in Mt Pleasant SC for the Christmas holiday and I'm looking for recommendations on things to do or see. I'm guessing most things will be closed on Christmas, which gives me the afternoon of the 24th and all of Sunday (26th) to do stuff.

I thought a trip to Fort Sumter might be in order, but I'm not much of a history buff and the descriptions of the tours sound pretty lame. I do think it would be cool to do something on the water (I kinda want to go rowing), but I guess there wont be a lot of activity given that it's winter.

I think I'm leaning more towards "involved" activities rather than watching something. So something like renting a small kayak and rowing around, go hiking on a local trail (something akin to Billy Goat Trail along MD/VA would be good), or even something basic like going to some batting cages.

What say you?

Even if you aren't a history buff, The USS Yorktown is pretty cool

There aren't going to be a lot of interesting trails in the area because it is pretty much flat here.

I would just say go downtown and find some things to do.

Agreed. Also, some great civil war / revolutionary war history there. Ft. Sumter (you get a great boat ride tour as well) and Ft. Moultrie (a mostly underground fort). The South Carolina Aquarium is also located there, and is worth going to.

If you are vacationing and are mobile, take a trip to Beaufort (where I was born), and Savannah. Both are full of things to do (Hunting Island lighthouse in Beaufort is one).

Ft. Sumter was cool to see for me, and I'm not a history buff. It's not a huge time investment, but if you're not interested, you're not interested. The Yorktown is also interesting. I haven't toured the sub there. All three are run from Patriot's Point, which is just on the Mt. Pleasant side of the new bridge.

There are plenty of things to see downtown. We usually wander through the market (can't remember its name... I think it was the old slave market, but is now just like a farmer's market selling goods instead of food). There are plenty of old churches and graveyards to visit, with a lot of the graveyards housing plenty of historically famous people (founding fathers of the US). Waterfront Park, the Battery (riverfront fortification with a nice view which also goes by many of the old houses), and carriage tours are the other things I'd recommend downtown. You could also go to Sullivan's Island to see Ft. Moultrie and some nice beaches. In Mt. Pleasant, there are some plantation houses (Boone Hall is the one that comes to mind), some historic houses you can tour, some really posh neighborhoods, and lots of shopping attractions - not much else.

Thanks for the replies so far. Boone Hall seems like it has potential, particularly the Garden Tour and Butterfly pavilion. The Yorktown and submarine at Patriot's Point sound tempting as well. So is the aquarium.

Angel Oak and the shopping center are appealing as well; the low/no cost of entry is appreciated. I'll probably end up picking only one or two of the paid places, since it seems like tickets will run $20 each :/.

Also, I'm just there for the weekend, so Beaufort and Savannah probably wont happen.

Angel Oak is pretty far from anything, IIRC, and it is closed on some days around Christmas/New Years (though you can still see it through the fence). That said, it's still worthwhile to drive out there to see it IMO.
