Mt. Bike Garb Question

Gravity

Diamond Member
I was asking the wife if the gouges and scratches on my legs make me look manly or warrior like and she seemed to think that it's more of the "old and accident prone" look.

I get scraped by thorns on my off track riding as well as a few contusions from spills. So my question to you Mt. Bikin Geeks is....should I be wearing pants or some sort of shin guards or would that be totally pariah-like?

BTW, it's very, very hot here.

Thanks,

I never wear protective gear beyond a helmet. It's just too freaking hot here (GA).

You just need to learn to crash less. 😛

I've spilled countless times in HS and learned how to do it properly without major injury... I wear no protection whatsoever and if I get hurt, thats the cost of not being cautious enough... or if I'm in the grave I'll blame the guy who ran me over

i wear a gelmet and gloves, that is it, and the stuff we ride id really nasty, really rocky and steap

if you want just get some lizard skins, they will protect yoru shins and knees, i have some i wear when i do downhills, but thats it

i cant imagin in florida that you woudl need more then a helmet

also try to stop falling

LMAO, I fall a few times per ride, like when I get stuck in l33t mud or underestimate the log I'm jumpin. I was thinking along the lines of long pants to protect from the thorns.

As you ride more, you'll fall less.
Yep. I generally hit the deck maybe one ride out of five (other than low-speed tipovers and such).

scratches are just part of the fun. if you don't have any, you're not pushing yourself. just try to avoid broken bones.

whatevery you do, (unless you ride a road bike or race or just enjoy shaving your body and wearing thongs) don't shave your legs.

I swore I'd never shave my legs. Then, I crashed in a crit and incurred massive road rash. Trying to clean the wounds and then dealing with bandages getting stuck in the hair is the world's biggest pain....literally. So now I keep the legs shaved during racing season.

Which is why REAL road racers DO have thier legs.....road rash is a given in racing....hairy legs just makes the pain last longer and longer. Sort of a "gentle" reminder every day until you completely heal.

Andyou're right about GA heat....helmet and gloves are about all that's tolerable down here. Anything else armor-wise and riding becomes almost unbearable.
