with MSN7 looking to be released pretty soon I'm wondering what's up with it... I've heard tons of rumours but nothing concrete regarding how MS wants to make it a paid service etc... does anyone know the latest?

i for one will totally NOT use msn 7 if its paid for... also, will they make msn6 users upgrade to 7 in order to sign in like they do anyway?

thx for any and all clarifications! :)

i think its sucks, I like my MSN SMALL, and less stupid things like NUGG, which shakes my screen when someone nugges me, STUPID smile faces fly across the screen , ITS more Bigger, and graphical like shit...

i LIKE MY msn SMALL and easy to configure, dont like it huge or having it maximized...

thats my two cents

Requiring a subscription would be a good way for ms to shoot themselves in the foot. If they charged for hotmail, at least people that payed for it could still email people using other providers. But as soon as they go below that critical mass of users for msn, people are going to just stop using en masse.

what really pisses me off is that msgplus won't support removing the ad banner in msn7 because MS wants to charge for it apparently... :|

I heard a rumour a year or two ago about how they were going to stop allowing 3rd party clients from accessing the service but that hasn't happened yet. Don't know if that's any indication. Maybe it's actually the same rumor and it just hasn't happened yet.

i think the NUDGE (spell it right if you diss it..) is kinda cool.
a funny way to get peoples attention...
sometimes we just have nudge wars, get like 3 people together, and nudge away.. :)
anywho, if you don't like it, turn it off..

i say the small the messenger the better, the bigger the crappies, msn 5 great, just perfect, small and did what it needed to so., MSN 6.2 is a Bitt bigger but the picture thing is awesome, so its great, MSN 7. is to bulky, i hope them make it smaller, thats why i went from icq to msn cause it was smaller .. and less annoying.

I've been using the beta. Seems the only thing you'll be charged for is custom content provided by other companies, like Packs (themed background/display pics/emoticons, etc), premium games and that kind of thing. If you don't want to pay money, just don't buy that stuff.

Otherwise, I've read numerous times that both Messenger clients are free for general use, and that this won't change.

And it's really simple to make it "small", kinda like v5.0. You can turn off the display pics from the conversation window, as well as both of the toolbars. And just about every feature can be turned off, so if you don't like emoticons, winks, nudges, automatic background sharing, etc...just turn it off.

Personally, I like some of the new features. The personal message is a nice touch, and can also switch to show your friends what you're currently listening to in WMP or iTunes. Contact cards are really cool, and I can immediately see when a friend updates their blog and go straight there with one click. I can now sign in as invisible. This is a good one: if I get kicked off the server for some reason, and Messenger tries to automatically log me back on, it uses my last-known online status...in previous versions, I would just be shown as "online" when this happened, and what a pain that was...

wow that's awesome and really encouraging news! :)

the one thing that still bothers me is that patchou (MsgPlus) refuses to remove the add banner from msn7 because he claims 'MS wants to make money off the software'... which is true in a way but to be honest one of the only features of MsgPlus that I really loved, besides transparency, was gettin rid of those annoying banners...

Yeah, the ads in the main window have always been the only real way for MSN to make any money off of Messenger. But hey, they have development costs, and maintaining a network that blankets the globe isn't cheap...looking at an ad ain't so bad, considering Messenger is free. I got used to it, I seldom notice it's even there (I couldn't tell you a single banner ad I've seen on any websites today, either. I simply stopped paying attention). If you're running W2K or XP, you could switch to Windows Messenger, which is ad-free, but it doesn't have the same UI as MSN Messenger v6.x or later...it still looks like v4.0.
