MSN problem? Modem problem?

I'm troubleshooting a Dell Dimension 2300 desktop with the MSN explorer and internet service. When attempting to log on, MSN sometimes freezes up when it goes to pick up the modem. If you're familiar with the software, it freezes up as soon as the littel animated MSN butterfly starts moving. It only does this some of the time too.. maybe about half the times you try to log in and it goes to dial. Any thoughts? I tried uninstalling MSN through the Control Panel already and reinstalling it, but that didn't help.

Why don't you get another modem and see if the problem persists.
