I have cable modem and share connection with 2 other friends using Linksys 4 ports router. After sharing the Msn voice chat feature doesn't work anymore because it doesn't allow user to call pc other side the firewall. But router itself has the so called DMZ hosting and I think setting this up might enable user to call pc outside the firewall (anyone try this before?)

However in order to do this, static ip must be assigned the pc that will be configured as DMZ. I set up a static ip under IP address (Network Properties), and gateway to my router ip. However, really don't what to fill in for the rest of the setting - Wings configuration, DNS configuration and etc. Any hints?

If anyone know how to make Msn voice chat feature works in the similar configuration please let me know :) Paying such a high phone bill every month like this will drive me bankruptcy soon.

Thanks.

You don't need to assign a static IP to the computer to use the DMZ. You check the DHCP list, find out which IP is getting assigned to the computer you are interested in DMZ'ing and then put that IP address into the DMZ host box (under the DMZ Host menu heading in the router configuration).

You shouldn't need to put the computer on the DMZ, however, to use voice chat. Find out which ports MSN Voice Chat uses (6190 is my guess, but there are probably others), and forward these to the computer that you want to use (using the DHCP list to find the DHCP-assigned IP of the computer you want to forward to and then using the Port Forwarding menu to forward the port (or ports) to the computer that you want to use).

Thanks for your reply first of all. However I'm quite new in the networking world and I would really appreciate your kindness if you can answer my questions as following.

>Find out which ports MSN Voice Chat uses (6190 is my guess, but there are probably others)

1. How to find out which ports the MSN is using?

>and forward these to the computer that you want to use (using the DHCP list to find the DHCP-assigned IP of the computer you want to forward to...

2. How to use the "DHCP list" to find the DHCP-assigned IP?

>and then using the Port Forwarding menu to forward the port (or ports) to the computer that you want to use).

This one I know how to do it :)

Thanks

How to find the ports? Search for "firewall" and "MSN voice chat" or something like that at MS's website or on google.com.

How to get the DHCP list? Go to the router configuration (192.168.1.1 in the default) and choose DHCP and then choose "DHCP Clients Table" and it should come up with a list of all of the computers names (it gets the name entered in the ID tab under Networking Properties) on the computer and their corresponding DHCP assigned IP. This is the number that you then enter into the DMZ host or the port forwarding menu.

ok right now i just have everything figure on setting up the DMZ hosting. I went to MSN support page and it said will only work if there is no firewall installed.

To verify this I did the following test. I tried to verified if I setup both DMZ and Port Forwarding (one at the time) correctly using ICQ file transfering. Before setting up both of these features, my ICQ was not be able to receive any incoming files from the outside world. So then I tried out the DMZ first. I set up a static IP address with everything (DNS, & gateway) configured. ICQ files transfering works and thus my DMZ is done correctly. Then I disable DMZ and enable port forwarding with listening port 20000-20019 open up. I set up this under my router setup menu, and as well as in the ICQ's firewall setting. All I did was, goto ICQ -> Preferences -> Connection :

Under Server: Set to "Using Firewall" and "Not Using Proxy"
Under User: Set to "Not Using Proxy" and "Use the folloing TCP listening port...", and then enter from "20000" to "20019".

In my router's setup menu, under Forwarding tap, I enter from "20000" to "20019" and also the static IP address of my machine (192.168.1.xxx) Everything above 100 for XXX are with DCHP enabled, while everything below 100 are without DCHP. My static IP address are without DCHP enabled (static IP for DMZ is the same as this one, therefore everything should be correct up to this point).

Then I restart ICQ and try receiving file. However, it doesn' works! I tried to reboot my PC but still no luck. I suspect something is missing in my setting and therefore would need your help. What could be wrong that prevent my "Port Forwarding" from working properly?
