MSN messenger question/etiquette?

I use aMSN to chat on the MSN network. Sometimes I get a chat window pop up with nothing in it from a buddy...what does this mean? Is there a message that has been lost? Or when they doubleclick my username on their end does it bring up an empty window on my end? If so...is this some etiquette that I have missed? Is it a way of saying "are you available for chat?"?

So many questions...

It's possible that it was a "lost" message, but it could also be that it was a lost invite to do A/V or play a game. But an IM window on your side won't open just because they opened an IM window on their side.

I do believe aMSN does this. I have had numerous times where I start a new conversation with a friend who runs linux (and hence aMSN) and he gets a message off before I do.

Kenazo, if you just leave it up do they eventually send a message? It wouldn't hurt to just send them one to see what's going on.

I think you're right kamper...I tested it out and aMSN does open up a blank window on my end when they start a conversation on their end (before they send a message).

Pretty cool actually....hmmm now I have to figure out what it means when someone does it and than doesn't send a message...what are the social implications here :D

You get the MSN popup window, when someone else on your buddy list (after you're already logged on) initially logs in. So: the 2nd person joining "notifies" to the 1st person, but does not get any popup him/her self. The 1st person (from a given buddy list) signing into MSN Messenger, does not get any popup.

vailir, I don't think he's talking about the little slider down in the bottom right. He's talking about an actual conversation window.
