MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger?

I just realised that I can still use Windows Messenger, and it is so much easier on the eyes. Also, it doesn't have the extra crap (all the fancy skin work, and the tabs), and I think is much safer to use (yes, I have disabled MSN Today [stupid thing shows your emails]), but the stupid tabs you can't get rid of.

I think I'm going to switch to Windows Messenger.

What do you guys prefer?

If you don't know the diffrence, then go to Start -> Run, type in msmsgs . That is Windows Messenger . [Everybody (on Windows) has this installed by default] Then go to Start -> Run, type in msnmsgr . That is MSN Messenger. [Not everybody has this installed by default]

Note: only applies to people using MSN or Windows messenger, I don't care if you prefer Yahoo! Messenger, or AIM, or whatever, but this is between these two.

If you do your research, you will find that Windows Messenger is a much greater security risk than MSN Messenger.

Never mind, found it.

But still, I feel Windows Messenger is a little less bloated.

I hate Windows Messenger. It pisses me off to no end. It runs sometimes and starts up for some reason and doesn't show up in the system tray, so then it starts to connect to the server and boots me out of MSN Messenger to sign into Windows Messenger. Stupid thing...Now it's the first thing I remove from windows when I reinstall.

uhhh.... OP.... windows messenger, to my knowledge is a service/protocol you just use to send messages to other computers.... there's no screename system, no chat functionality, no central servers, no nothing.... and random spammers will spam you windows messenger popups if you have net ports open for it....

it was used back in the day to send messages out to every client on the network saying "uh, I'm about to turn off printer six, or xyz server is goign down for maint."

this surley can not be the "windows messenger" you speak of

edit: oh, I see in its infinite wisdom, MS has named the default MSN chat client "windows messenger"

anyone who actually installs msn communication sutff by choice needs their head examined....

That's the Windows Messaging System.. not Windows Messenger.

Windows Messenger was an early predecessor of MSN Messenger

i have tried the hardest to find what sets the MSN messenger apart from the windows messenger. to my dissapointment, the only apparant differences are the former's ability to post a custom user avatar, and its hideous memory requirement (at least +5MB over the windows messenger). personally, i could care less about those useless plugins available for the MSN messenger, and security has never bothered me. what am i missing here? the interface looks neater with windows messenger, i must add (try changing the background pic, looks pretty nice). in the end of the day, i just use miranda IM since i need to keep in touch with my computerphobic friends on AIM and AIM only, and miranda IM is by far the most functionality-minded no frills messenger with least resource requirement, at least to my knowledge. but windows messenger isnt too bad really... not having to install it manually is also a plus, though not a huge advantage.
