MSN Messenger alternative

Further to this issue, who knows of a decent third-party alternative to microsoft's fantastic MSN messenger?

the only features I'd like to see in the alternative are the images, streaming webcam and if possible, the ad bar at the bottom. I especially like that.

If you are running windows try aMSN it's an open source clone with improvements.
If you are running Linux either aMSN or GAIM, I would prefer GAIM.
 
hmmm what's interesting is trillian cannot connect either, beta 8.0 displays the same issue. My router has no special settings and windows firewall is disabled. Any ideas what could be causing the lack of connectivity here?

Last I checked Trillian can't do MSN cam streaming, but can do Yahoo pretty decently. Much better than YIM does on its own for some reason.
