MSI Z87 Gaming and Pentium G3258 Not booting * SOLVED

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Purchased the above combo deal along with:

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-1600C9D-16GXM

About me: built maybe 10 machines over a couple of decades. No guru.

Issues: Will not boot. Not posting. No beeps. No bios or anything on the monitor.

On power up, the motherboard lights up. The optical drive, cpu fan and case fan all spin.

The memory has be reseated and changed back and forth from the recommended 2nd and 4th slots.

The processor has been reinstalled.

The monitor is known good, but may not have run on via displayport previously.

Keyboard is also connected.

The board has two illuminated buttons, reset and power. Neither do anything.

Power will come on via front panel but switching the power supply off is required to power down.

Again, Thanks

This may have to do with running a Haswell Refresh CPU on a Z87 chipset. Unless it has the BIOS for the newer chips, it may not detect the CPU properly. BIOS 1.7 or above is recommended for the refresh CPUs.

This was a Newegg Combo Deal that was posted in Hot Deals. One would think that a whole lot of other folks would be having problems if they were incompatible before update.

Would love to get to the point where I could try a bios update.

I obviously don't know what is going on. Maybe bite the bullet on a new power supply. If it solves the problem, it will be well worth it.

Thanks for the input. I will address the bios at some point I hope.

The pentium chip is too new for that board without a bios update. Newegg has been known to do this in combo deals.

Searched the Newegg reviews for this board.

2 of the 47 reviews referenced the G3258.

Both 5 star. It looks familiar. I think I did the same search pre-purchase.

Pretty much.. If you don't have an earlier CPU to test/flash with, an RMA may be your best recourse. 2013 board, 2014 chip

An earlier socket 1150 lying around? Nope.

Still seems odd that no one else is reporting the same problem. Of course, who knows how many of these boards they dumped.

People have different ways of reporting problems. They could be dishing MSI with grief. There may not be many who went in on that particular deal. You could see if there is a PC repair shop nearby who has a chip they can flash it with.

Thank you.

That took me from a sad puppy to a man with a plan.

Really great idea.

Thanks all!

A new power supply and all is well.

My bad. The old power supply did not have the proper connections for the CPU.

Looks like it is going to be a nice budget build.

Thanks again.

Glad that's all it was! YAY!
