MSI Z68 board, no boot 'overclock not supported'

Zargon

Lifer
built a z68 machine for my brother

its a msi z68a-g43 with a i5 2500k
xigmatek gaia sd1283
2x4gb gskill sniper ddr3 1333 1.5v
1tb samsung f3
xfx 6870
antec neo eco 620w PSU
rosewill challenger

about a week after it was built it stopped booting and started to report 'overclock not supported' and is refusing to boot

its not OC'd, its under 40c on idle according to bios

he does a reset to fail safe defaults and it does the same thing

he decided it was the HDD and got a new one, reinstalled windows ETC same thing

I am guessing its the BIOS/mobo

has anyone head of ANYTHING like this happening?

hes not that literate to this

yeah thats what I told him to try first.

would suck if he got a bad board right away

hes silly enough to think one bad mobo means MSI sucks and right them off

Before ditching the MB, try replacing the CMOS battery. A low or failing battery can cause this kind of behavior.

I'm glad to help out.

Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while. 😛

apparantly it did it again this AM, but now it lets him 'accept defaults' and it will boot

hes updating drivers now(after being told about 20 times to, not sure if he was able to do the BIOS update or not)
