MSI x800 Fan Falls Out

I bought a new 22" monitor and in less than five minutes my system artifacted and then shut down. When I pulled the case to see if the fan was working I saw it was hanging below the card by the power wire. I pulled the card and saw that the fan assembly had popped off the hub on the card. It would go back on easily, but there seems to be either a circlip or something missing, maybe glue that has broken down over time and repeated thermal torture? Anyway, it works fine with the case on the side, but the minute I stand the case up (and fan now facing down) it falls right out.

Any ideas on a good fix?

Thanks!

A good fix would be to find an aftermarket fansink. A cheap fix would be to remove the fan alltogether and attach some kind of fan to the card such as a normal 80mm case fan. Perhaps remove the shroud over the heatsink as well. Some people have done that and found temperatures actually going down versus the stock fan.

Thanks for the reply - ideally I would like to re-attach the fan to the card - is there a glue that can withstand the heat?

any superglue should be upto the job

fan is relatively light and heat is not that high.

just make sure it cures properly before turning it on :)

if it's a heatsink fan assembly that fell off - so the heat sink has a flat bottom & the chip surface you're gluing it to has a flat top - then plain old RTV or epoxy will work fine.

thermally, it will be AOK if you push the heatsink on hard to make the excess adhesive squish out the sides, so that the layer of glue is very thin, with minimal air trapped.

I called MSI, they wanted to send me a new fan assembly for only $37. And I was considering it. Then tonight I saw NewEgg had a new Sapphire 3850 for $39 shipped, and that sounded like a better way to spend $40 :) Hopefully will get here Tuesday.
