MSI ti200 128mb or MSI ti4200 64mb?

My friend wants to buy my ti200 128mb off of me and the only thing I can afford right now is a MSI ti4200 64mb, I might be able to get enough money for the 128mb but I'm not sure yet. He wants it this weekend, but I also need a new card this weekend so I can't wait to get a little more money for anything better. Currently I play BF1942, UT2003, MoHAA, SoF2, Warcraft 3, and so on...I'm wondering if the 4200 would give me any noticable improvement, I usually run games in 1024x768 with quincunx and aniso on, but on the newer games I do have to sacrifice those to get good performance.
 
Take the GeForce 4 ti4200! why...?

😉 Even if you get GF3TI500 speeds out of that GF3TI200 you'll still be slower than 4200 at standard speed. Not only that but 4200-64MB nearly all use 3.6ns RAM so expect to get from 250/500 to about 300/600, JFYI that will beat a 4400! Other tangible benefits GF4TI cards bring over GF3 are MUCH BETTER image quality, dual display, TVout, AA and they really pull way ahead with the faster CPUs.

😀 No doubt at all the GF4TI4200 is the superior card in every way. If you can afford it the 128MB 4200 is a better idea, but even the 4200-64MB easily owns GF3, Rad8500 or Rad9000PRO.

Of course the Ti4200 is going to outrun a Ti200. That's not what he's asking.

My answer:
Dude you're going to hate it if you get that 64mb Ti4200! Unlike your Ti200 the GF4 WILL run your games at a high enough settings that the 128mb of memory will be needed. Hold off just a bit longer till you can get the 128mb card. This will make the difference between texture thrashing and not in UT2003.

Suck it up man. Do the Lan party this weekend (I assume) with your old card and wait till next paycheck and get something that you won't regret.
 
I have too much to do and don't have a job at the time, so I can't wait til next paycheck. Im a highschool student with soccer 6 out of 7 days a week, in case you were wondering why. I'm am just trying to get the best price out of my ti200 and be able to afford something that will last me a little longer, probably until sometime around christmas. Will the 64mb really affect me that much at the current time? I still may be able to get the 128mb version but I have other things I need to pay for right now.
 

No, having 64 right now won't kill you. There will be some particular circumstances in some of the more modern games when you'll "feel" it. If you sudden dips from 60 fps down to 10-12 then you've texture thrashed. Just bump down the texture detail a notch on that particular game.

It would be nice to have that 128 for sure but the 64 meg card will still run great.
 
does anyone have one of these cards that they can report back with UT2003 or BF results? I have a 1600+ @ 1450mhz, 256mb pc2100....if that helps any
 
I think I have an idea...I'll sale my card this weekend, use my friends Rad7200 for the weekend, order a Albatron ti4200 128mb for $153 off of newegg....that is only $9 more than the 64mb MSI at the local shop. I won't have the greatest gaming experience at this weeks lan, but next week for the 100+ people lan I will have a nice card and enjoy myself for 18 hours of gaming!! what do you all think of my idea, does the Albatron card have slower ram or anything that will limit my o/c?
 
😉 No Albatrons are reportedly one of the best o/c'ers and people who own them seem to be very happy! Well worth paying the extra to get th e128MB GF4TI4200. 128MB makes little diff in pretty much all modern games even with max details, but there are some current games in which it can effect perf, this situation is only going to get worse with time and when you do sell your 4200 on it will be a lot easier and more profitable to sell a 128MB version. The 4200-128MB do use a lower std clock (250/444) and 4.0ns RAM is most common, expect an o/c about 300/550 which will still beat 4400 cards. As a guide to how perf is affected when a gfx card's RAM proves inadequate, a GF4TI4200-64MB @ 300/600 will drop to 4200-128MB @ 250/444 tpye levels, not good since it tends to be less than $20 for the extra RAM! So yes, Albatron 4200-128MB should be a great card!

😱 Don't get me wrong, GF3 cards are still both very good and very capable cards, if you can wait for 3-6 months more options will certainly open up but then that is true of any component (DDR-II, dual channel RAM, SerialATA, 3ghz CPUs etc). I'm not knocking GF3 cards but GF4TI are clearly superior esp when it comes to image quality, dual display, TVout, AA and getting the most from the faster CPUs (like AthlonXP).
 
yeah, I'm trying to get rid of my card as fast as possible because I know soon I won't be able to get any money out of it. thanks for all the help
